The Woodlands Underground? A Look at "The Current" Tunnel Proposal

by Bren Brewer

Innovation has always been a hallmark of The Woodlands, from our meticulously planned villages to the iconic Waterway. Now, the Township is looking even further ahead—or rather, further down.

The Woodlands Township Board of Directors recently approved a proposal for The Boring Company’s “Tunnel Vision” Challenge. The concept, nicknamed “The Current,” involves a pair of parallel 12-foot diameter tunnels designed to move passengers in electric vehicles (EVs) beneath our busiest corridor.

As someone who has seen 14 years of "big ideas" come and go in Montgomery County, I’ll be the first to say: This sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. But before we get too excited, let’s look at what this actually is—and what it isn't.

What is "The Current" (On Paper)?

If selected as a winner of the challenge, The Boring Company would potentially build a mile-long underground loop at no cost to the Township. The draft concept focuses on connecting the heavy hitters of our Town Center:

  • The Woodlands Waterway Marriott & Convention Center
  • The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
  • Waterway Square and Town Green Park

The goal? To move people efficiently during peak periods (like sold-out concerts) without adding a single car to the surface streets.

The Reality Check: High Hopes vs. Hard Ground

While the idea of zipping under the Waterway in an EV is undeniably cool, it’s important to remember where we are in the process:

  1. It’s a Competition: The Woodlands is submitting a proposal. We are competing against other entities for The Boring Company's attention.
  2. Zero Guarantees: Even if the proposal is "accepted," there are massive hurdles involving permitting, environmental due diligence, and final board approvals.
  3. The "Musk" Factor: Projects involving The Boring Company are known for high ambition, but they don't always cross the finish line in every city they scout.

Why It Still Matters for Homeowners

Even if "The Current" never breaks ground, the fact that our Township leadership is pursuing these high-tech solutions says a lot about the desirability of our area.

  • Maintaining Relevance: Constant innovation keeps The Woodlands at the top of national "Best Places to Live" lists, which protects your home equity.
  • Infrastructure Focus: Whether it's a tunnel or improved trolley routes, the focus on Town Center mobility makes nearby neighborhoods in Spring and Conroe more attractive to "move-up" families.

The Bottom Line

Is an underground tunnel going to change your commute next year? Almost certainly not. But is it a sign that The Woodlands is committed to staying the premier destination in North Houston? Absolutely.
