Fall Construction Alert: 7 Major Road Projects Kicking Off in The Woodlands & Montgomery County

If you live anywhere near The Woodlands, Conroe, or Spring, you know that traffic and mobility are constantly on our minds. The good news is that local leaders are taking action, and this fall, we are seeing a major push in infrastructure improvements funded by the 2025 Montgomery County Road Bond.
While construction cones are never fun, these projects are essential to improving safety, reducing congestion, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for families across Montgomery County, especially in our key areas like The Woodlands, Spring, and along Lake Conroe.
A recent report detailed seven major transportation projects—mostly focusing on vital intersection improvements—that are either beginning construction or moving forward rapidly this fall. Here is a breakdown of what residents and commuters need to know about the upcoming work in Montgomery County Precinct 3.
Key Intersection Improvements Coming This Fall
The majority of the upcoming work is focused on maximizing efficiency at highly congested intersections. The goal of extending turn lanes is simple: to create more room for turning cars, preventing them from backing up into through-lanes. This makes commuting safer and more efficient.
Here are the projects beginning construction or moving into utility coordination this fall, affecting popular routes for first-time buyers and move-up families:
Focus on Research Forest Drive
This corridor, a major artery connecting The Woodlands to areas like Magnolia and Conroe, is seeing four critical improvements:
- Grogans Mill Road at Research Forest Drive (Right-Turn): The extension of a right-turn lane from northbound Grogans Mill onto eastbound Research Forest Drive is set to begin construction this fall, following the completion of the engineering design.
- Research Forest Drive at Greenbridge Drive (Left-Turn): Expect to see construction start this fall to extend and widen the left-turn lane from eastbound Research Forest Drive to northbound Greenbridge Drive.
- Research Forest Drive at Gosling Road (Dual Turn Lanes): Design work is wrapping up, and utility coordination is next for extending dual left-turn lanes from westbound Research Forest to southbound Gosling, and for turn lanes connecting Gosling to Research Forest in both directions.
Critical Upgrades on Major Thoroughfares
- Woodlands Parkway at Kuykendahl Road: This heavily trafficked intersection is getting a boost. Engineering design is complete to add a left-turn lane and extend lane storage from northbound Kuykendahl Road to both westbound and eastbound Woodlands Parkway. Utility relocation is scheduled to begin this fall.
- Lake Woodlands Drive at Gosling Road: Design is complete for improvements that will extend turn lanes to enhance mobility and safety for turns from Lake Woodlands Drive onto Gosling Road.
- Grogans Mill Road at Lake Woodlands Drive (Left-Turn): Construction on extending the left-turn lane from northbound Grogans Mill onto westbound Lake Woodlands Drive started in mid-September.
Ongoing Major Project: HWY 242 Widening
This project, which impacts commuters and access to major hospitals and shopping centers between I-45 and FM 1488, is nearing the finish line:
- Hwy. 242 Widening: This massive $29.11 million TxDOT project, which widens lanes and restripes intersections using existing right-of-way, is 66% complete as of September 2025. The estimated completion timeline is the fourth quarter of 2026. This widening is crucial for alleviating congestion in one of the fastest-growing corridors in Montgomery County, affecting residents in Conroe and New Caney.
The Real Estate Impact
While construction can be inconvenient in the short term, these infrastructure investments are hugely beneficial to property owners. Investing in mobility is investing in home value and quality of life. Easier and safer commutes make our communities more desirable for first-time buyers and growing families looking for homes in the $200k-$600k price range. These projects demonstrate a strong commitment to managing growth effectively.
We encourage all residents to use traffic apps for real-time updates and to exercise caution around construction zones this fall and winter. Improved traffic flow is on the way!
